From New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Linwood Barclay comes the third jaw-dropping thriller set in Promise Falls. It's May 23rd, and a contaminated water supply in the small town of Promise Falls, New York, has sent hundreds of people to the hospital with flu-like symptoms-and dozens have died. But the question for many, including private investigator Cal Weaver, remains: Who would benefit from poisoning this town? Meanwhile, Detective Barry Duckworth is faced with another problem. A college student has been murdered, and he's seen the killer's handiwork before-in the unsolved homicides of two other women in town. He begins to piece together the seemingly unrelated events and realizes that the motive for harming the people of Promise Falls points to the number 23-and working out why will bring him closer to death than he's ever been before.

Bizarre incidents continue to maim and kill the residents of Promise Falls, N.Y., in Barclay’s fast and furious conclusion to the trilogy that began with 2015’s Broken Promise. Many believe a serial killer is at work, while others are perplexed and refuse to believe such a thing could happen in their beloved burg. But then the next calamity hits with brute force: townspeople—young, old, rich, poor—begin to drop like flies from a mysterious ailment. Symptoms such as dizziness, blurred vision, and a racing heartbeat come on suddenly, and most victims are dead within hours. Others linger, comatose in a hospital crammed with bodies and helpless nurses and doctors. As the death toll rises, a pattern finally emerges, and Det. Barry Duckworth races to save the town and his own loved ones. Though some readers may feel befuddled by the sheer number of characters and relationships, Barclay skillfully juggles all the different plot lines right up to the stunning conclusion. Author tour. Seasoned mystery writer Barclay returns to Promise Falls, upper New York state's capital of mayhem and madness. The characters are familiar from two earlier Promise Falls audiobooks. This audiobook may be the last of a trilogy, and many mysteries are solved, but it's also a cliff-hanger, and more may be on the way. Brian O'Neill does a workmanlike job with the narration, keeping the characters straight, maintaining a good pace, and pronouncing clearly. Occasionally, his delivery lapses into monotone. Richard Poe delivers the chapters that feature small-town detective Barry Duckworth. He offers the classic world-weary baritone of the aging, overweight crime fighter. The production is well put together. F.C. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine
